Bangkok Street Photography

Exploring the real Krung Thep (old name of the city) offers an excellent opportunity for street photography in Bangkok. But what do I mean by the ‘real Bangkok’?

Bangkok is a very busy, fast and modern city filled with skyscrapers, business and commerce but it has a more quite and slow side too. By walking around – away from business and tourist areas – you will find narrow backstreets and ‘sois’, small roads where you will have the feeling that time has stopped many years ago. Here, people live in communities, sitting in the street, gathering with friends, eating, cooking, chatting and just enjoying. You can see plenty of interesting ‘every day life’ scenes happening right in front of your eyes and in front of your lens of course.

Reason why Bangkok is a great place for street photography is that taking picture of the locals is never really a problem. They are one of the friendliest and most welcoming nation on the planet. If you want to make a portrait of a person, simply ask, and most likely they will happily say yes.

My gear for street photography in Bangkok

With my Canon 5D Mark III I always prefer using prime lenses and the all time favorite is the Canon 50mm 1.4 but during my last Bangkok street photography adventure I used Canon 40mm 2.8 which I bought for roughly 170 UK Pounds.

The 40mm proved to be very fast in auto-focusing and super sharp, but when it comes to portraits, nothing can replace the 50mm.

The street photographs from Bangkok that you will see bellow are all made with 50mm, the ones with the 40mm will be in different post.

What are the best places for street photography in Bangkok?

Bangkok has great street photography opportunities for those who are willing to get off the beaten track and make an effort to explore the real city and its locals. Stay away from guide books, tourist traps and immerse yourself in the culture.

My all time favorite is walking along Maha Chai rd. and Trok Sake, also the area around the canal can prove to be very fruitful for street photography in Bangkok.
